School Library Journal Review
Gr 12 Up-This handy companion to Characters in 20th Century Literature (Gale, 1989) should be dog-earred from frequent use in no time. The compiler has made every attempt to include a wide variety of women and writers from non-English speaking countries. (A few appear in both volumes since they span two centuries.) Entries are alphabetically arranged by author and include detailed plot summaries and analyses of main characters; secondary characters are also examined, although not in depth. Books and articles relating to the individual authors and their works are appended to each entry. Character (arranged by last name) and title indexes conclude this comprehensive and readable reference.-Marjorie Lewis, Heathcote School, Scarsdale, NY (c) Copyright 2010. CHOICE Review
Modeled on Laurie Lanzen Harris's Characters in 20th-Century Literature (1990), this work joins its predecessor as a convenient companion to Gale's various literary criticism series. There is some overlap between the two for writers whose works were published in both centuries. Arranged alphabetically by author, this work covers more than 2,200 characters from 100 of the 19th century's most significant literary figures, with a slight emphasis on British and American novelists. A reading list that follows each author entry cites articles, books, and two Gale series, Nineteenth Century Literary Criticism (1981- ) and Dictionary of Literary Biography. There is an index of characters and titles. Highly recommended for libraries that own Nineteenth Century Literary Criticism or that lack the more comprehensive Masterplots II or Cyclopedia of Literary Characters II (1990). L. H. Booklist Review
This compilation, aimed at high school and college students, was prepared with the assistance of an advisory board of librarians and teachers. It provides brief plot summations and detailed character analyses for approximately 200 novels, plays, and short stories by 100 nineteenth-century writers who are currently studied in U.S. classrooms. An effort was made to include women and ethnic writers, but the emphasis is on major authors of the period. Individuals listed range from Fanny Burney (1725-1840) to Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) and from Harriet Wilson (1828-1863) to Fern{{ }}an Caballero (1796-1877). This volume was patterned after the earlier title Characters in Twentieth Century Literature [RBB Mr 1 90], and approximately 10 authors who wrote at the turn of the century appear in both volumes (Chekhov, Crane, O. Henry, Hardy, etc.), but the articles have been revised and expanded here. The book is arranged alphabetically by author and provides the individual's dates, nationality, and principal genres. Then the various works are considered in individual essays that analyze how the characters develop the author's themes. A list of further readings is provided for each author, including, but not limited to, such other Gale publications as the Dictionary of Literary Biography. The volume concludes with an index of titles and characters. Compared with this new work, more comprehensive listings of characters, with less detail for each, are available in other reference tools, such as Magill's Cyclopedia of Literary Characters (1963) and the Dictionary of American Literary Characters [RBB Mr 1 90]. Libraries owning the various Masterplots series may find they already have adequate coverage of the authors and works included in this volume. While not an essential purchase for libraries owning these other tools, this new work will be helpful in public, high school, and academic library collections where there is high demand for compilations of brief literary analysis.
