Library Journal Review

Self-management is rapidly becoming the hottest topic for the 1990s, especially as the massive horde of baby boomers mature and experience career frustration. Hollander joins this already saturated field with an interesting and unique twist. She explains the matrix of work preference and competence--the unfortunate ``doom'' state (when one's career no longer appeals or challenges)--and provides helpful hints on how to identify your skills and talents that may prepare you for your ``capstone'' (ideal) career. Numerous checklists, step-by-step guides, and discussion of organizational culture/politics help make this more than another superficial gloss-over of well-known principles. Less complex than Richard Bolles's What Color Is Your Parachute? ( LJ 6/1/73) but more pragmatic than Marsha Sinetar's Do What You Love, the Money Will Follow ( LJ 5/1/87), this is recommended for collections weak in this area.-- Dale Farris, Groves, Tex. Booklist Review

Most career-advice books have some kind of hook or gimmick. If the gimmick works, the book is successful or useful. Hollander, a psychologist who heads a St. Louis career consulting firm, makes use of a self-assessment tool called the "doom loop," which is a matrix that plots skills and likes. It can be used at any stage of one's career to help evaluate one's situation and make decisions. On the up side of the loop, one may be challenged (likes work but needs to acquire or learn more skills) or content (likes and competently performs work). On the down side, one may be frustrated and bored (competent but doesn't enjoy work) or unhappy and miserable (not competent and doesn't like work). Hollander recommends using the doom loop to decide when or whether to move on to one's next "capstone," her term for short-range (five to eight years) career goals, and she successfully makes the point that satisfaction and competence are equally important considerations in career planning. ~--David Rouse
