Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

This collection of essays, first published in 1992, offers a serious effort to examine the end of the Cold War, its meanings and implications. The book presents the thinking of leading historians, political scientists, policy analysts, and commentators from the United States, Great Britain, Germany, France, Norway, and the former Soviet Union. Together they discuss such important issues as the origins of the Cold War, its ideological and geopolitical sources, the cost of that epic conflict, its influence on American life and institutions, its winners and losers.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 269-275) and index.

Booklist Review

Nearly two dozen key historians, political scientists, and policy analysts from the U.S., Russia, and Europe contributed think pieces about the meaning and implications of the cold war's end to the journal Diplomatic History and now to this volume. Their essays consider the origin of the Soviet-American confrontation, who won the cold war and how, and the future of capitalism and democracy in eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Walter LaFeber, John Lewis Gaddis, John Mueller, Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., Samuel F. Wells, Jr., Alexei Filitov, Bruce Cumings, Ronald Steel, Richard J. Barnet, and Raymond L. Garthoff deal with the broad, general questions; Noam Chomsky, Nikki R. Keddie, Bruce R. Kuniholm, Hermann-Josef Rupieper, Denise Artaud, Geir Lundestad, Gar Alperovitz and Kai Bird, Ernest R. May, and Hogan himself concentrate on "regional and national issues"; David Reynolds and Robert Jervis focus on the future and the role of historical analysis in shaping that future intelligently. Thoughtful, articulate essays (with limited footnotes) by respected experts on critically important issues. (Reviewed Aug. 1992)052143128XMary Carroll
