CHOICE Review

A model prosopographical analysis of the 506 people who held one or more encomiendas (grants of Indian labor and tribute in return for protection and religious instruction) between 1521 and 1555. In Part 1, the author examines the encomenderos' role in conquest and settlement, regional origins, occupations, prior experience in the Indies, and residence in New Spain. He also analyzes distances between encomiendas and residences, encomienda succession, and patterns of association through mariage, officeholding, and encomienda sharing. The section concludes with a comparison of the New Spain encomenderos with the 168 conquerors of Peru identified in James Lockhart's complementary work, The Men of Cajamarca (CH, Apr'73). Part 2 provides biographical sketches of the 506 encomenderos. Based on thorough research in printed primary sources and relevant secondary materials, this book is important for the substantial information it brings together for the first time. Every college and university offering course work in colonial Latin American history should purchase this study. General readers interested in the conquest of Mexico will also find it highly informative, clearly written, and sometimes fascinating. M. A. Burkholder; University of MissouriDSSt. Louis
