CHOICE Review

Bowles is still an underrated and neglected writer, but his short stories cannot be said to be neglected now that Hibbard has published this study of the short fiction. Although unorthodox, the study is exhaustive as far as it goes. Half of the book is Hibbard's close story-by-story summary and analysis. The other half is divided between comments by Bowles (in prefaces, interviews, and letters) and by "the critics" (who are as various as Alice B. Toklas, Gore Vidal, and Ihab Hassan). Some of the critics help, but it is left to the reader of this volume to establish a clear point of view (beyond appreciation) towards Bowles's work. Hibbard clearly loves the work, and an astute scholar could, with Hibbard's help, choose some significant stories; a few of the critics suggest critical stances that the scholar could use to produce one or two useful articles. Hibbard himself presents the raw material but does not stake out a powerful claim for Bowles's importance. He does offer a useful preface, a chronology, and a selected bibliography. Recommended for undergraduate or graduate libraries that need to fill in good collections of literature from the period 1930-90. Q. Grigg; Hamline University
