CHOICE Review

This excellent little book offers thorough analyses of John Gardner's short fiction, concentrating on the "adult" stories in The King's Indian: Stories and Tales (1974) and The Art of Living and Other Stories (CH, Sep'81) but also briefly treating the author's stories for children in Dragon, Dragon and Other Tales (1975), Gudgekin the Thistle Girl and Other Tales (1976), and The King of the Hummingbirds and Other Tales (1977). Since Gardner has been taught and written about primarily as a novelist, Henderson's volume provides much-needed commentary on the less well-known but equally accomplished shorter works. In addition to his uncommonly insightful readings of the short fiction, Henderson includes a selection of Gardner's own remarks on his fiction (taken mostly from interviews) and a sampling of criticism published by other scholars on the short fiction. Finally, Henderson has assembled useful primary and secondary bibliographies. The book is distinguished throughout by its high quality, the result of Henderson's long acquaintance with and mastery of his subject. For academic and public libraries. -C. G. Masinton, University of Kansas

Booklist Review

Interest in Gardner and in moral fiction, even less fashionable in these deconstructionist times than it was when he took up its colors, testifies to the persistence of his candidacy for a place in the literary canon. Here, Henderson introduces the concerns that occupied Gardner's novels as well as his short fiction, justly praising the writer's craftsmanship and discussing his controversial siphoning from other stories. The short summary of Gardner's critics is a welcome feature of the Twayne format. Recommended for larger lit-crit collections. Bibliography; to be indexed. --Roland Wulbert
