CHOICE Review

Unique in introducing and defining the terminology of bioethics from a legal standpoint, this dictionary's 161 entries are arranged alphabetically and range in length from several paragraphs to several pages. In his definitions Hedges (health sciences, Ohio Univ., and a practicing attorney) focuses on legal defenses and case law, and on bioethical aspects of terms, "Abandonment" to "Xenotransplantation." An introductory essay discusses US health care and care providers, bioethical issues, and the law. The book also includes a sample living will, a table of cases, and a well-organized subject index. A brief annotated bibliography emphasizes law books over medical or ethics titles and lists no journals or Web sites. Strangely, it omits the important Encyclopedia of Bioethics, ed. by Warren Thomas Reich (5v., 2nd ed., CH, Oct'95). Comparisons with the comprehensive Encyclopedia, which covers bioethics from religious, philosophical, medical, and historical perspectives as well as legal, would be inappropriate. The dictionary would well serve libraries that do not own the Encyclopedia, or private collections of health practitioners or attorneys. L. N. Pander; Bowdoin College
