School Library Journal Review

Gr 8-12 It is hard to imagine a more complete explanation of the different aspects of optics. The book begins with an overview of the physics of light and the foundation of optics. A thorough discussion follows on the impact dis coveries in optics have made on such fields as computer science, photogra phy, laser technology, and military technology. Where appropriate, histor ical background is given, as well as a look at possible future developments. Although Hecht's writing is lucid, much of the material is highly technical. Therefore, only more advanced stu dents are likely to find this book useful. Graphs, diagrams, and charts make up most of the illustrations. This is a useful addition for collections needing an ad vanced and wide-ranging study of the field of optics. Todd Morning, Schaumburg Township Pub . Lib . , Ill. (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

Gr. 5-10. In this excellent overview of optics, ``the ancient and wonderful science of light,'' Hecht discusses a surprisingly wide range of subjects. Following an introduction to the nature and properties of light are chapters covering the human eye, optical instruments (lenses, mirrors, microscopes, and telescopes), sources of natural and artificial light, light detection (photography, copying machines, electronic detectors, robot vision), infrared and ultraviolet light, cameras and television, optics in medicine, laser technology, and the future of optics. Readers will enjoy intriguing sidelights such as how to interpret bar codes on a supermarket package or why a laser gun would be useless as a ``zap'' weapon. Illustrated with practical diagrams, the volume is simple and pleasing in design. Hecht's clear writing style and straightforward approach make the book suitable for a wide range of readers.
