CHOICE Review

This easy-to-use reference tool, one of the "Choices and Challenges Series" edited by Elizabeth Vierk, is written for the more than seven million caregivers to 95% of the over-65 population who are not being cared for in institutions. Fradkin and Heath have garnered a wealth of facts, examples, and advice from a variety of current and reliable nonmedical resources. Information is presented in an expanded outline form, and the authors elaborate on topics of particular interest to uninitiated caregivers. Brief, real-life examples to which the reader can identify are scattered throughout. Detailed do's and don't's are given in regard to such concerns as making a home safe for an elderly person; selecting a nursing home; dealing with Medicare, Medicaid, and insurance companies; preparing wills; and arranging for funerals. The final chapters contain useful annotated bibliographies on resource organizations, and print and nonprint resources. Although containing some basic information on major deficits and disorders affecting the elderly, this book will not be very helpful to those seeking information about providing hands-on hygienic care or assisting with activities of daily living. Recommended for general readers. L. G. Muzio; Empire State College, SUNY
