Library Journal Review

This is a collection of essays written by women attorneys for women who need legal information. Family- and health- related issues such as divorce, family violence, and reproductive rights are covered, as are business topics of particular concern to women, e.g., intellectual property, business start-ups, and the woman as employer. Estate planning, sexual discrimination, dealing with disabilities, and the rights of lesbian women are considered as well. The writing is consistently clear, objective, and practical. Each chapter summarizes the pertinent legal issues and provides definitions of legal terms and lists of agencies and associations offering assistance. Contributors successfully present the concepts in the context of the contemporary social climate and do an excellent job of clarifying complicated procedures. Recommended for public libraries.‘Joan Pedzich, Harris, Beach & Wilcox, Rochester, N.Y. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. CHOICE Review

A handy, well-organized, comprehensive compendium, Women's Legal Guide aims to help women make informed decisions by providing information and guidance in negotiating both straightforward and complex legal questions. Beginning with a chapter on selecting and working with a lawyer, this handbook is arranged in five broad sections: personal/body issues, family law, women's rights at school and in the workplace, business law, and life planning. Twenty-nine female attorneys contribute chapters focusing on a wide range of expected legal issues of particular concern to women including health care, marriage and divorce, spousal and family violence, sexual harassment, and retirement and estate planning. Of particular note, however, are chapters dealing with timely and relevant issues such as child care planning for seriously ill mothers, sports, legal rights of lesbian women, disabilities, and legal issues for refugee women. Chapters are enhanced by bibliographies and organizational resources for further information and assistance. A glossary and comprehensive index round out the volume. Priced reasonably enough for personal collections, and essential for academic and public libraries. J. Ariel University of California, Irvine
