Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

The introduction of pollutants can have disastrous consequences for the delicate and complex ecosystems that are supported in freshwater rivers and streams. Dr Haslam, a distinguished plant scientist, presents a systematic and thorough analysis of the biological impact of pollution throughout the system, and discusses the methods of measuring and monitoring pollution damage. The focus is on plant communities in temperate watercourses but evidence from other biota is introduced as necessary.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 236-249) and index.

CHOICE Review

Haslam sampled more than 33,000 sites in UK waterways and is an acknowledged authority on stream pollution and aquatic ecology. Although all the examples are from European countries, the general approach is applicable in other areas of the world. Haslam, a botanist, provides details on how a conscientious reader can carry out a stream survey to assess the amount of pollution and manmade damage to a waterway by documenting the changes in the natural plant and animal communities. Pollution is broadly defined to include acid rain, sewage, excessive nutrients, thermal effluents, heavy metals, biocides, surfactants, radioactive wastes, and suspended solids. Like H.B.N. Hynes's The Ecology of Running Waters (CH, Apr'71), Haslam's book is an excellent primer on river ecology. Both of these books and C.E. Hunt's Down By the River (CH, May'89) focus on the aquatic ecosystem from food webs to the substantial impacts of man. The book is profusely illustrated with line drawings, which serve to enhance and illustrate the author's points. An excellent 14-page bibliography; short indexes (general and species names); 7 useful appendixes. Recommended for undergraduate and public libraries. -M. Dickman, Brock University
