CHOICE Review

In the 160 years since the great Italian opera composer Verdi enjoyed his first successes, innumerable titles have been published worldwide concerning his life and works. Harwood (Georgia Southern Univ.) has sifted and organized this daunting mass into a concise survey of "the most significant materials published through 1995." Since it is intended to aid scholarly research, it excludes general materials from magazines and newspapers, and is made up of 1,036 annotated citations drawn from published biographies, bibliographies, correspondence, and the like, organized in chapters with precise, useful titles like "Studies about Individual Operas." The citations are cross-indexed by subject. Also included are a chronology of Verdi's life and the valuable "Biographical Dictionary of People Associated with Verdi." The preface is an illuminating essay that states the parameters of the work, gives an outline of Verdi scholarship, and describes the two major repositories of Verdiana. This excellent reference source for anyone beginning a serious study of Verdi is strongly recommended to all university libraries supporting music programs. J. L. Patterson; University of Wisconsin--Eau Claire
