Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

Autonomy, bodily integrity, and freedom -- all in the heart of Roe v. Wade -- collide with other powerful forces whenever a woman considers ending her pregnancy. The New Civil War examines this nexus of forces, recognizing its complexity and interrelatedness.

CHOICE Review

A collection of 15 essays on the social, cultural, political, and psychological contexts of abortion in the past quarter century, The New Civil War is a significant addition to the literature of the contemporary abortion debate. Commissioned by the American Psychological Association, the book begins with an overview of national abortion policy since 1973. Subsequent chapters address the continuing controversy over abortion; differential attitudes among women of color toward pregnancy termination; and abortion in the context of clinical psychological practice. Part 3 is the section of the book that seems to contain the freshest and most original contributions to understanding the ways in which women (and their male partners) situate themselves as individuals within the abortion debate. It includes five essays covering the relationship of abortion to violence against women, men's attitudes, and an empirical study of the psychological impact of abortion on a group of women participating in a clinical trial of Mifepristone (RU486). The book concludes with a set of recommendations in the arenas of practice, research, and policy. The New Civil War should be on the shelves of medical as well as psychological practitioners and on the reading lists of social scientists and historians concerned with reproductive issues.
