Booklist Review

Gr. 6-10. These additions to the World Leaders series introduce two important World War II figures. Mussolini, Italy's Fascist leader, started his political career as a socialist, but broke with that group when he realized power came from the industrialists and capitalists. Hartenian describes in great detail Mussolini's consolidation of power throughout Italy and his alliance with Adolf Hitler, though at their early meetings Mussolini did not think much of the less experienced German leader. Mussolini's ignoble fall, ending with his public hanging, is also traced. Hirohito begins dramatically with the emperor's address to the people ending World War II and then looks back at the man's life, a cloistered existence full of proscribed behavior. Also carefully detailed are Japan's imperial ambitions and that country's part in the war. Both books are well researched, though the Hirohito biography has a somewhat livelier writing style. Numerous, interesting black-and-white illustrations appear throughout, with captions that expand the text. IC.
