While its primary focus is the United States, Feminism also examines how multiculturalism and global thinking have infused today's feminists with a sense of widened responsibility for girls and women worldwide. Readers will find a cultural overview of society's changing perception of women and a thoughtful analysis of the directions feminism is taking today.

Other sections include a chronology of significant events, a collection of biographical sketches, and annotated listings of organizations and print and nonprint resources, including Internet coverage. Rounded out by a comprehensive index, this volume is excellent for anyone seeking a one-stop reference work on feminism.

Includes index.

Includes bibliographical references (p. 245-286).

CHOICE Review

The latest in ABC-Clio's "Contemporary World Issues" series, this is a convenient beginning guide to contemporary feminism. It contains many kinds of information, including history and chronology, biographical sketches, directory of organizations, and bibliographies of both print and nonprint resources, including Internet and Web sites. The most substantive part has two sections: "Facts: Feminist Issues, Social Changes, and Education" introduces the varieties of feminist thought and diverse approaches to such issues as equal rights, lesbian rights, reproductive freedom, women's health, violence against women, affirmative action, and education; "Economics, Politics, and Choice Words" provides basic information about women's work inside and outside the home, political movements and representation, and the short, highly selective list "Bons Mots of Feminist Leaders." Although Harlan unmistakably emphasizes the US, she enhances this focus in most sections by adding global issues and perspectives. A short glossary and index round out the volume. The handbook reflects Harlan's experience writing books for young adults; its primary audience will be college undergraduates, high school students, and general readers looking for an introductory overview.
