Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

The first volume devoted entirely to fullerenes. Covers bulk production by extraction from carbon smoke deposits; carbon-arc synthesis; separation of fullerene mixtures; doping the fullerenes; structural elucidation by ¹³C NMR, X-ray and vibrational spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy, crystallography, etc.; conductivity and superconductivity in fullerenes doped with alkali metals; thermal properties of fullerenes; and metal complexes of fullerenes.

"Developed from a symposium sponsored by the Divisions of Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Petroleum Chemistry, Inc., Polymer Chemistry, Inc., and Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering at the 201st National Meeting of the American Chemical Society, Atlanta, Georgia, April 14-19, 1991."

CHOICE Review

Early in 1990 a new form of carbon, the giant cluster C[6[0 (called "buckminsterfullerene" or "bucky-ball" because of its resemblance to the geodesic domes of R. Buckminster Fuller) was discovered; it could be made in quantity, with properties considerably different from diamond or graphite, the other well-known forms of carbon. This electrifying discovery set off an immediate firestorm of activity among chemists and physicists throughout the world, an activity that shows no sign of abating. If anything, the subsequent discovery that C[6[0 is simply one member of a class of intriguing substances, now commonly referred to as "fullerenes," has led to greater excitement and activity among those following developments in this area. This book contains the text of papers presented at a 1991 symposium on fullerenes held in Atlanta, Georgia. As can be expected for any fast-moving area, much has happened since the symposium was held. To that extent, the book is already somewhat out of date. Nevertheless, a good undergraduate chemistry collection would do well to acquire this book: it represents a good introduction to the subject, and adds a historical dimension, inasmuch as the speakers are all pioneers.-A. Fry, Wesleyan University
