CHOICE Review

There is a body of literature in the psychological sciences indicating that there is no difference in the average psychometrically measured intelligence of males and females. Halpern (California State University, San Bernardino) reminds us that items selected for inclusion on standard IQ tests are balanced in such a manner that the instruments produce sexual equality with regard to this global ability. However, specific measures of cognitive abilities do produce differences between the sexes (e.g., women consistently outperform men on measures of verbal ability and men typically do better on visual-spatial tasks and on tests of quantitative abilities). Some of these differences are statistically robust and may have important socioeducational ramifications. Halpern offers an introduction to this topic, which in today's political climate is apt to prove very controversial-particularly if one opts to interpret these differences as being the result of biology as opposed to variations in socialization of gender behaviors. Undergraduate readers who wish to understand the complexity of such questions and/or the methodological problems involved in trying to answer them will find this book readable and useful. The bibliography is valuable for those bent upon pursuing the topic.-W.B. Dragoin, Georgia Southwestern College
