Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

This handbook presents an overview of the historical and social context of rape in America.

Rape in America covers topics such as major law enforcement, the judicial system, and correctional system trends in dealing with both the rapist and the victim. Also included is an analysis of the types and motivations of rapists, a psychological profile of rapists, and a statistical profile of rape victims.

For easy reference, this volume features detailed listings of print and nonprint resources and an extensive directory of organizations that have a significant impact nationally or regionally in the movement to stop and prevent sexual violence. This work is an invaluable source of information for students, researchers, and journalists, as well as rape crisis counselors, administrators of women's shelters, and law enforcement officials.

Includes bibliographical references and index.

CHOICE Review

A title in the "Contemporary World Issues" series, Hall's handbook uses recent legal, judicial, correctional, and medical trends, developments, and procedures to present profiles and statistics of rapists and rape victims. The book cites a variety of sources including books, journal articles, interviews, and private and government studies dating from the early 1970s to 1994. Almost half the book consists of a chronology of significant events, biographical sketches of notable individuals in the field, a descriptive directory of organizations/sexual assault coalitions, and an annotated list of 45 print, film, and video resources. The book discusses marital and acquaintance rape and male victims but not gang rape. Neither chapter references nor the annotated list mentions Robin Warshaw's I Never Called It Rape (Harper & Row, 1988) or theoretical writings by women of color such as Angela Davis or bell hooks. The index lists four entries for race (but not racism) and only two entries for class. For a more in-depth analysis of rape see Transforming a Rape Culture (Milkweed Editions, 1993). This handbook does collect some useful information and can serve as a broad introduction to the topic. Recommended with reservations for general readers and lower-division undergraduates. L. Krikos; Ohio State University
