CHOICE Review

Editors Guerra and Smith have put together an exceptionally well-integrated set of readings focusing on the extent to which unique cultural environments influence the expression of violence by youth. The authors begin with a discussion of the relationship between ethnicity and violence, followed by chapters that focus on underlying concepts. This is followed by a set of chapters that focus on the nature of violence in specific ethnic environments. The final chapters present techniques for effectively addressing youth violence, with a focus on understanding and respecting ethnicity. The use of charts and tables is limited but effective, and the book is well referenced throughout with good author and subject indexes. There is a good working glossary with consistent use of compatible definitions across the various chapters. The contributors reflect a broad range of skills and reputation, with most of the contributors identified with major universities. ^BSumming Up: Recommended. For those who work with youth or are in a violent environment, and for libraries serving departments of anthropology, criminal justice, counseling, psychology, social work, or sociology. R. T.
