Booklist Review

Gr. 6-10. From the World Leaders series, here are biographies of two monarchs of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Following the usual format, both books feature informative texts enlivened by a great many fine black-and-white graphics. Here the illustrations are mainly engravings from the period. Well chosen and reproduced, they give the flavor of the times as well as simply showing how the people and places looked. James I was king of Scotland following the abdication of his mother, Mary Queen of Scots. He became king of Britain upon the death of Queen Elizabeth I in 1603. Henry of Navarre, king of France from 1589 to 1610, calmed the warring religious factions in France and promoted tolerance for both Protestants and Catholics during his reign. The two volumes will be useful, reliable additions to library collections needing information on these two kings. CP.
