CHOICE Review

The authors describe processes of coping and adapting to prison life, with particular emphasis on the mental health problems of prisoners and encounters with violent inmates. Toch (SUNY, Albany) is an expert on violence and corrections; Adams received his doctorate in criminal justice from SUNY, Albany. They use a variety of types of information (statistical to individual case portraits) to explore changes in prison inmates over time. The authors argue for the substitution of the concept of maladaptive behavior in place of the traditional dichotomies of "mad/bad" and "irresponsible/responsible." They conclude with a proposal for a self-management center designed to enable prisoners to develop skills in coping competence. Although the perspective is primarily psychological, this book will appeal to a multidisciplinary audience. For all reader levels. -C. S. Widom, Indiana University--Bloomington
