CHOICE Review

"Toxicology in the Industrial Environment" would have been a better title for this excellent introductory book. Malachowski covers all essential bases, including history, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, toxins in the body, dose-response curves, types of hazardous agents and exposures, and the various organ effects of toxic materials. The book's value lies in its thorough discussion of monitoring, protection, and control methods. It also teaches practical calculations. The last chapter treats risk assessment and should be taken to heart by all those who infuse discussions on poisons with fear and other irrationalities. There is an extensive 18-page glossary; each of the 16 chapters has appropriate study exercises; and numerous tables, figures, and diagrams give this work an aura of professionalism. Managers, workers, teachers, students, health professionals, laypersons, and even the media and the public would greatly benefit from the information offered here. The ultimate outcome: toxicological literacy, much needed today to combat "toxic fears" and misinformation. All levels. M. Kroger; Pennsylvania State University, University Park Campus
