Booklist Review

According to Glowa, a behavioral pharmacologist for the National Institute of Mental Health, inhaling solvents is probably the least well known form of drug abuse, yet it is ``more harmful to the individual and society than abuse of many other drugs.'' After identifying a variety of substances from alcohol to shoe polish that have found a place on a growing list of abused elements through human history, he examines the chemical aspects of solvent absorption, following up with general discussions of research into both behavioral and physiological consequences of inhalant use and a look at what epidemiologists have discovered about users. A clear antidrug message emerges with Glowa stressing the importance of more research into the effects of solvents and more strenuous efforts to educate the public about the hazards of inhalants, particularly because they are often readily available and inexpensive. A helpful introduction to an aspect of drug abuse often glossed over in materials for young adults. Black-and-white photographs illustrate the text, which concludes with listings of drug abuse agencies and further readings, a glossary, and an index. No notes. Gr. 9-12.
