Booklist Review

Gr. 5-9. The first volumes of Chelsea House's new Hispanics of Achievement series, these feature appealing covers, accessible writing, and many black-and-white photographs. The story of Clemente, the first Hispanic in the Baseball Hall of Fame, begins with his Puerto Rican childhood. It then details his tough times as a newcomer to the major leagues, contending with unsympathetic management and sportswriters and with his own temper, before he emerged as an outstanding player. Estefan begins rather brutally with the 1990 bus accident in which the singer's back was broken, then traces her personal history and her career from her birth in Cuba through her success as a pop singer with the Miami Sound Machine. Standard, dependable biographical fare, recommended where demand for each subject warrants purchase. ~--Carolyn Phelan
