CHOICE Review

Not a field guide, but a compact identification guide to fungi without gills. Identification is based on comprehensive keys that require the use of a good microscope; thus, species that can be identified only by microscopic examination are included. This single, small volume brings together material heretofore available only in a number of separate sources, some not in English. The numerous line-drawing illustrations are labeled only with the name of the fungus. Because features of the structures illustrated are not always obvious, many of the drawings are of marginal use to the nonprofessional. The glossary is good and is essential for understanding the descriptions in the keys and text. The authors do not include a bibliography, but refer to their major sources in the introduction, directing the reader to comprehensive bibliographies in those sources. Intended for the identification of British species, this book may not include some species found in the US. Although written for the amateur mycologist as well as for the professional, the effort required to key out species will probably attract only the very serious amateur. Could be used by undergraduates with some mycology background. -D. E. Jegla, Kenyon College
