Gr 6 Up-Introductory material in this guide to 196 nations includes a full-color image of the coat of arms of each one and a guide to the articles. Entries detail general information such as the country's capital and currency, followed by 35 clearly delineated subcategories that discuss environment, religions, history, judicial systems, labor, foreign trade, education, and famous people, among other topics, allowing easy comparisons. A geographic profile, map, biographical profile of a government leader, and color photographs are also included for each country, as are key economic indicators in comparison to other nations, including the United States. Each section concludes with a bibliography and websites, and the endpapers display the flags of the countries detailed in the volume. Each volume of this 10-volume set starts with a table of contents for the specific volume and a guide to country articles. Each country profile, organized alphabetically, begins with eight features: country name, capital, flag, anthem, monetary unit, weights and measures, holidays, and time related to the Greenwich mean time. Thirty-five color-coded subheadings and their corresponding numbers, as well as geographical profiles, complete each section. This new edition contains 196 countries of the world and the Palestinian Territories. Color maps (with coordinates, a scale, and boundary lengths), photos, and charts enhance the overall attractiveness of this updated set. The 35 sections included under each country include such categories as location, size, topography, climate, plants and animals, environment, population, migration, ethnic groups, language, religion, history, government, political parties, industry, income, labor, foreign trade, and more. The most up-to-date statistics are reflected in each profile, along with color graphs and charts, biographical profiles, and a chart of selected social indicators as compared with those of the U.S. and low- and high-income countries. A brief bibliography of suggested books and websites concludes each profile. Volume 10 contains a comprehensive index to the set. Entries range in length from 4 pages (United Kingdom African Dependencies) to 34 pages (United States). The set lacks any discussion of the countries' foods consumed by their populace or a cumulative index in each volume. However, overall, this well-written encyclopedia would be a valuable resource for elementary, middle-school, and public libraries.
