CHOICE Review

An excellent and unique overview of the controversial topic of physician-assisted dying, which includes euthanasia, assisted suicide, and DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) orders. All the important questions are covered such as physicians' responsibilities, distinctions between active and passive euthanasia, and the validity of slippery slope arguments. The issues gain clearer focus because they are addressed from a variety of viewpoints as well as disciplinary perspectives. Also, US practice and policy are set against the practices and results of the permissive euthanasia policy in The Netherlands. The differences in medical practice and societal attitudes in that country, e.g., home care and home dying, as well as the extensive Dutch survey of patients' reasons for seeking euthanasia, raise some very important questions about US practice and beliefs. This is a valuable resource for all persons, professional or lay, interested in the many ethical, legal, and other dilemmas surrounding the care of the dying. General and academic readers at all levels. J. A. Kegley; California State University, Bakersfield
