CHOICE Review

Gravette's book is aimed at tourists and those readers who may be interested in the architectural history of the Caribbean region. It consists mainly of a geographical account of the region by island and island group, further broken down into building types. Initial chapters deal with building materials and architectural details unique to the Caribbean and the successive waves of demographic and cultural influences (Spanish, French, Dutch, English, African, etc.) that have come to characterize the region's architecture. A short architectural dictionary, a list of relevant architectural preservation agencies, and a small group of rather badly printed color plates taken from slides round out the book. This reviewer found the book rather dull; it reads as though it were derived from voluminous historic preservation survey reports rather than from firsthand knowledge (the author, in fact, has written a good many guidebooks to the Caribbean). According to the bibliography, this is the only recent survey of Caribbean architecture. All levels. ; Boston Architectural Center
