CHOICE Review

The prolific Plutchik (emer., Albert Einstein College of Medicine) argues that despite the universal relevance of emotions to life and psychotherapy, psychotherapists have neglected the importance of understanding and uncovering emotions, resulting in theoretical and clinical ambiguity. The author sets out to clarify the understanding of emotions so that clinicians can develop increased insight into this fundamental aspect of their work. In reviewing the academic research literature, he presents the psycho-evolutionary theory of emotion, which is predicated on four psychodynamic propositions: much mental life is unconscious; many mental processes operate in parallel systems (such as conscious and unconscious) resulting in conflict; childhood experiences and genetics can play a major role in behavior; and cognitive interpretations of oneself and judgments about other people influence social interaction. The theory consists of the structural model, which classifies emotions along the dimensions of intensity, similarity, and polarity; the sequential model, which relates feelings, physiological changes, and action impulses; and the derivatives model, which relates adult human behavior to that of animals and children and to important conceptual domains, namely, traits, personality disorders, and ego defenses. Plutchik presents all this in the context of measurement, psychotherapeutic strategy, and technique. A truly impressive accomplishment and a major contribution to the field. Upper-division undergraduates through professionals. D. Sydiaha emeritus, University of Saskatchewan
