CHOICE Review

The benefits of physical activity are numerous and can impact quality of life; as the population continues to age and live longer, fitness activities and programming are necessary for the older segment of the population. The title of this book gives the impression that it focuses only on exercises and exercise prescription appropriate for older adults. However, it does more. The first three chapters present physiological, psychological, motivational, and medical factors affecting older adults. Chapter 4 provides the practitioner with screening and assessment techniques, chapter 5 gives exercise techniques, and chapter 6 covers programming issues appropriate for older adults. A short glossary is also available. Older adults have unique fitness and exercise needs that are appropriately addressed in this book. Pictures of older adults demonstrating exercises add credibility; the text is easy to read and understand and is organized in a practical, logical manner. This is a valuable tool for practitioners (e.g., activity coordinators and personal trainers) and health professionals who work with older adult populations. N. L. Goggin; University of North Texas
