<subfield code="a">Addressed to you, as a fellow mortal. With breathtaking directness, and from his own special knowledge of the chill temperatures of doubt, C.S. Lewis vigorously speaks out for the great common faith which unites all Christians, a faith which is palpable, immediate and unavoidable. In this on-volume edition which is a revision and expansion of three highly popular works by M. Lewis, he explains that his purpose is not to convert to any single denomination, but to prove that in the centre of each " there is a something, or a Someone, who against all divergences of belief, all differences of temperament, all memories of mutual persecution, speaks with the same voice." It is this central core of agreement that leads the author to speak of the nobility of a "mere" Christianity. In The Case for Christianity, published in England as Broadcast Talks, the reader will find set down with gusto and effortless logic the reasons why an honest mind can accept Christianity as true. Next, in Christian Behaviour he will discover the joys of living that may be expected from following the sane and sensible Christian code of ethics. "Morals," writes Lewis, "are directions for running the human machine," and he applies this definition to sexual, social and religious aspects of life. Discussing the difficult and unpopular admonition to "love thy neighbour as thyself," he suggests a meaning, and a way to practice that meaning, that will seem startling in its "rightness." Progressing then to Beyond Personality, a remarkably clear and persuasive statement is made of what Christian belief actually is. A chapter entitled "Nice People or New Men" is perhaps one of the most challenging. To those who may think themselves secure in possessing sound nerves, intelligence, health, popularity and good upbringing, a warning is sounded. The devil, Mr. Lewis points out, was once an archangel, and a world full of "nice" people may be as much in need of help as one populated by the little, low, timid, warped, thin-blooded, lonely people. Moreover, it is at least partially Mr. Lewis's genius for speaking from the audience rather than at it that led Time magazine to call him "one of the most influential spokesmen for Christianity in the English-speaking world." Men and women of every shade of faith or opinion will find in his summary of "mere" Christianity no vague, spiritual exhortation, but a positive gathering of the basic facts that affect their lives and the sometimes puzzling universe in which they live.</subfield>
