In this book one of the greatest present day Catholic thinkers explores the relationship among religious experience, philosophy of God, and systematic theology. In doing so he challenges the separation that has grown up between the philosophical and theological approaches to the God problematic. By philosophy of God, Fr. Lonergan means knowledge of God that is not logically derived from revealed religion. By the functional specialty, systematics, he means a specialty that receives revealed truths from other specialties and seeks some imperfect understanding of them. The relationship between the two, he contends, is that while they are distinct, they should not be separated. He bases his conclusions on evidence that they have a common origin, they complement and reinforce each other, and they are concerned with the common goal, the promotion into clear consciousness of the major factor in the integration and development of the person the book contains the 1972 St. Michael's Lectures given at Gonzaga University, Spokane, ... together with theological and philosophical questions provoked by the lectures and Fr. Lonergan's responses. Thus the volume launches a continuing dialogue.
