Mankind, in its eternal search for an ideal of behavior capable of conferring happiness–i.e., capable of banishing man's fundamental insecurity–has sought, through a diversity of cultures and over thousands of years, to lay down certain points of reference, certain principles, certain "values"to guide him in that search. It now seems that one of the most important aspects of the present moral crisis is that these traditional values, once regarded as enduring, if not immutable, have been de–mythologized–or, if you prefer, debunked... But having rejected the litany of "bourgeois"values, what are we left with? Where shall we look now for our true and ultimate moral values? Amid the anguished uncertainty that pervades the present age, it is of overriding importance, if we are to arrive at systematic understanding of man as man, to declare, loudly and at length, that love, in its broadest meaning, is the only value capable of dynamizing man's acts and his moral strivings.
