A detailed history of the monastic order founded in 1098 at Citeaux and whose best known early figure was St. Bernard. Fr. Lekai's The White Monks of twenty-five years ago has been the standard account of the Order to date; the present volume, although similar in structure, is essentially a new work. Based on the latest research and a lifetime's study, it carries the history to Vatican II and after. Part I presents a chronological history of the Order from its beginning to the reforms of recent years. Part II discusses the Order's achievements in spirituality, learning, liturgical reform, art and architecture, as well as the importance of lay-brotherhood and nunneries. Especially noteworthy is the long chapter on Cistercian economics , which emphasizes the everyday experiences of the most representative abbeys rather than stressing the economic principles enunciated in the statutes of the Cistercian general chapters, as has been customary in previous studies.
