Throughout the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first, the United States has provided remarkably fertile ground for innovative residential architecture, from the Shingle Style pioneered on the East Coast in the late nineteenth century to the deconstructivist experiments in California. The past 120 years have produced such icons of modern architecture as the Greene brothers' Arts and Crafts Gamble House in Pasadena, California, of 1908; Michael Graves's Neoclassical villa in Princeton, New Jersey; Richard Neutra's California Modern Kaufmann House; and three Frank Lloyd Wright masterpieces: Fallingwater, and the Storer and Sturges houses, as well as masterpieces by Richard Meier, Frank Gehry, and Peter Eisenman. Works by a new generation of influential architects, including Zoka Zola, Michael Bell, and Peter Bolllin, are also featured in this expanded and updated edition of the original from 1995.
Over the decades, American and international architects alike responded to this country's rising standard of living, rapidly expanding suburbs, and receptive often liberal clients—factors that have encouraged the creative use of both unorthodox building materials and mass-produced components. During the 1920s, for example, Frank Lloyd Wright recovered the now-ubiquitous concrete block from what he termed the "architectural gutter," using it in several remarkable homes in Southern California, among them the Storer House in Hollywood, of 1923. These and other masterpieces of American residential architecture of the past 120 years are reprinted here—along with 11 new projects that bring the original volume into the twenty-first century; they are accompanied by authoritative commen-tary and extraordinary photographs.
One chapter is devoted to each of 44 houses. Selections of the architects' plans and freehand drawings complement the photographs in this history of exceptional American house design. The text by Kenneth Frampton explores each house in depth, discussing its context in the progression of American architecture, its role in the architect's oeuvre, and its broader relationship to the history of twentieth- and twenty-first-century cultural and artistic movements.
