Publishers Weekly Review

In this study of modern corporate management, Harvard Business School professor Zaleznik ( Power and the Corporate Mind ) examines the phenomenon of charismatic leaders (Lee Iacocca, Ronald Reagan), the role of young MBAs, the often merely theoretical nature of business ethics, the ``deniability'' cloak for top echelons in corporate scandals and other nettlesome aspects of business today. Management leaders must project a company's future, know what to do and be persistent in implementing decisions, stresses the author, but compulsively ``professional'' executives seeking efficiency, cooperation and control can stir up undesirable internal politics. Zaleznik repeatedly cites Niccolo Machiavelli's advice on ruling, which is at once more specific than the treatise at hand and more concise. (May) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved

CHOICE Review

This book is the culmination of an analysis of questions that appeared in a Harvard Business Review article by the author, "Managers and Leaders: Are They Different?" 55(May-June, 1977): 67-78, but its discussion is timely. Zaleznik (Harvard) cites the attitude of American management as a key factor in the decline of competitiveness of American industry in world markets. Describing managers as being concerned with process rather than ideas, and as lacking passion, Zaleznik makes a sound case for a reinvigoration of leadership. His analysis is effective despite a disappointing concluding chapter. Ultimately, leadership is described as a personal quality that includes personal magnetism, commitment, and the ability to apply imagination. Reference notes are included at the end of the book. The volume may appeal more to practicing managers than to scholars and academics. Professional and upper-division/graduate collections. -L. J. Cumbo, Emory and Henry College
