CHOICE Review

This long-awaited second edition of the very popular and respected volume of the early '80s (CH, Nov'81) is far from the standard book on cosmology. Harrison (emeritus, Univ. of Massachusetts) treats virtually all of the usual material, but much of it in a personal way. Emphasis is on physical insight, and mathematics is used as an adjunct and not a necessary tool, at least for much of the book. Sections called "Reflections" and "Projects" follow each chapter, as in the earlier version. The "Reflections" are thought-provoking philosophic and historical addenda and occasional mathematical discussions, which enrich the text and place the ideas in perspective. The "Projects," for those who use the book as a textbook or as an auxiliary text, could serve as bases for class discussions or homework for a sophisticated general education course. The discussions of model universes are extensive, but the relevant current data are scarce and are left for subsequent chapters; even then there is paucity. The bibliography is quite extensive, though there is little from the last few years. This very well written book belongs on the shelf of all physicists and in all libraries. Undergraduates; faculty. K. L. Schick; emeritus, Union College (NY)
