CHOICE Review

One of the more frustrating human resource problems confronting US companies today is how to improve the transition of new college graduates from the classroom to the workplace. All too often, this transition is characterized by false expectations, low levels of job satisfaction, declining job performance, and excessive turnover. In his unique and well-researched book on this topic, Phillips offers corporate human resource professionals, college placement officials, and even graduating college students some useful insights into how to improve this transition process and how to help new college graduates succeed as organizational members. Chapter 1 provides an overview of the problems that occur as new graduates try to adjust to full-time employment; Chapter 2 examines the role of college work-study programs in minimizing transition problems in the first place. The next five chapters present a seven-step model for an effective transition program, i.e., recruiting, preemployment education, orientation, education and training, adaptation, job assignments, and program evaluation. Chapter 8 outlines various administrative aspects of a successful transition program. Phillips is a human resource professional with numerous publications to his credit. His new book draws on organizational case studies and his practical experience, and is must reading for those concerned about the employment and effective utilization of personnel.
