Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

A unique, pictorially based introduction to group theory, emphasizing concepts and applications. The text develops molecular symmetry and molecular electronic structure without the use of complex matrix algebra, instead using chemical topics, such as bonding, as vehicles for the group theory. Essential mathematical aspects are treated in the book's five extensive appendixes, which serve as a self-contained treatment of mathematical group theory.

"Reprinted with corrections May 1986"--T.p. verso.

CHOICE Review

This is an elementary book on group theory as applied to chemical problems, with the emphasis on bonding and electronic structure rather than spectroscopy. The 100-page appendixes include most of the formal theory, leaving the rest of the book for a more pictorial and functional description of group theory. Kettle's book contains more how-to details than similar introductory group theory works and is a good supplement, rather than replacement, for F.A. Cotton's classic, Chemical Applications of Group Theory, (2nd ed., 1971). Kettle provides several new examples of group theory applied to bonding and electronic structure. The references, with few exceptions, are to the primary advanced scientific literature from which the examples are taken. It is extremely unfortunate for the student that there is not a single reference to another textbook or monograph on group theory. There are numerous problems (without answers) and many good figures. Because of the emphasis on bonding, certain other topics are omitted or given limited treatment; the index is short. The preface indicates that two audiotapes (called Symmetry in Chemistry) are available that can be used with this book. Recommended for all academic libraries serving chemistry majors.-R.
