CHOICE Review

This highly readable book is a timely and useful addition to the literature relating to women's participation in sport and athletics. There are several notable things about the book. It is a comprehensive compilation of current scientific physiological information interpreted by an established expert and presented in commonsense terms; it therefore serves both to clarify background issues and to dispel myths and misconceptions that from years have plagued women's sports. The author covers the continuums for young to old and from recreational to highly competitive and in doing so provides information not easily available elsewhere. Sprinkled throughout the book are physiological facts of interest to all women regardless of their activity level; this is particularly true of the section dealing with nutrition, weight control, and exercise. References compiled in the back of the book are extensive and varied; also helpful are a glossary, abbreviation list, and index. Because of its scope, concise style, and valuable information, this is a book for participants, teachers, coaches, students at all levels, and parents.-J. Archer, College of William and Mary
