CHOICE Review

These conference papers are organized under three headings: A Scientific Perspective, Major Frontiers of Exercise Research, and A Corporate Perspective. The scientific perspective covers areas currently under investigation concerning exercise in relation to oxygen transport, hormonal adaptations, aging, stress, and changes in gene expression of skeletal muscles. Exercise in relation to maximizing human performance and productivity, the psychological effects, and a molecular basis of training effect in skeletal muscle are the topics covered under the major frontiers of research. Papers in the corporate perspective section discuss several programs in operation in terms of their successes and problems, as well as their associated values to the corporation. A strong foundation in biology, anatomy and physiology, and exercise physiology as well as an understanding of statistics is needed to benefit from the material presented. These monographs, each accompanied by an extensive list of references, are for the sports science professional rather than the weekend athlete. Appropriate academic levels: graduate and upper-division undergraduate. -G. C. Meyer, College of Staten Island, CUNY
