Library Journal Review

This valuable reference tool is the first published volume of a projected 25-volume encyclopedia designed to cover all religions. In less than 500 breathless pages an international array of scholars sketch significant aspects of Christian spirituality from the birth of Jesus to the 12th century in both the Eastern and Western churches. In varying degrees, attention is given to scriptural spirituality; the spirituality of the apostolic fathers; several forms of monasticism; and to sacramental, liturgical, christological, Marian, and artistic spirituality. Although little attempt is made to relate a spirituality to its social and historical context (except for the excellent pieces on ``Spirituality in Celtic and Germanic Society'' by Pierre Riche and ``The Gregorian Reform'' by Karl F. Morrison), nevertheless most sections provide sound and succinct analyses. Basic for religious and theological collections. Bennett D. Hill, St. Anselm's Abbey, Washington, D.C. (c) Copyright 2010. CHOICE Review

Part of the series titled ``World Spirituality: An Encyclopedic History of the Religious Quest,'' this book is the first of three volumes on Christian Spirituality. It contains varied conceptions of what constitutes Christian spirituality. The first section of Christian Spirituality outlines the historical development of Christian spirituality in the early church, the great Fathers, monasticism, the Gregorian reform, and famous theologians through the 12th century. The second section explores basic spiritual themes such as the role of Christ, the Trinity, the human person as image of God, grace, prayer and spiritual guidance. The volume is an excellent compilation of the major movements and ideas of Christian spirituality for the period covered. The emphasis is on the intellectual and historical dimension of spirituality and not its heart-i.e., the inspiration and experience that underlie the developing concepts and practices. As a reference text, the book is a must for all academic libraries and a comprehensive beginning place for any person interested in unfolding the mysteries of Christian spirituality.-A. McDowell, Ithaca College
