Booklist Review

Gr. 7-12. Part of the Need to Know Library series, this examines a subject about which surprisingly little is available for teens, espe~cially on an easy-to-read level. Using a modified question-and-answer approach shot through with comments from teenagers, Ayer offers a simplified but down-to-earth view of what marriage involves--dirty socks and dirty diapers as well as passion, trust, and caring. It's apparent that Ayer feels teenage marriage is a risky proposition, and she weights her text accordingly ("When you have an argument with your date, isn't it nice to go home?" etc.), but she doesn't ignore the fact that some teen marriages do work. Appealing photographs will draw browsers, as will the open format, and Ayer includes a glossary as well as a few additional readings. Other titles in the series appear in this issue's Series Roundup. ~--Stephanie Zvirin
