Booklist Review

Gr. 6-9. The latest offering in Rosen's Need to Know Library series, this volume defines the problem of incest in simple terms, discusses the effects of incest on victims, and tells how victims can get help. Spies, who emphasizes that incest is a betrayal of trust that must be brought into the open, describes several types of incestuous relationships and explains why incest may occur in dysfunc~tional families. She then goes on to examine the difference between nurturing, friendly, and sexual touches, using final chapters to provide information on getting help and breaking the incest cycle. Though most of the photographs illustrating the book are appropriate, a few are misleading: a teenage girl setting the table is used as an example of role reversal between parent and child; a picture of a young girl bringing her smiling mother a snack has a caption reading "Mother-daughter incest is not often reported, but it does occur." A spacious layout makes the text easy to read, and a glossary, bibliography, and list of organizations that help incest victims are supplied. ~--Chris Sherman
