School Library Journal Review

Gr 7-12-- Writing on a timely topic, the Lees provide an exemplary examination of a serious contemporary fact: women are seriously underrepresented in political office in proportion to their registration as voters. They use a non-partisan casebook approach to a discussion of the political careers of women throughout the United States, providing a balanced picture of the road to successful participation in political office. Examples range from a portrait of Dianne Feinstein to a comparison of the different political styles of Ruth Harper and Frances Weston, both Pennsylvania state representatives sup ported by widely different constituencies. The book gives readers access to information about congressional internships, addresses for additional information, and appendixes with statistics of the women currently in public office. It's not a dry, scholarly text; instead, it attempts to draw young people into action. ``Politics are tough--but so are women,'' say the authors. --Dorothy J. Coakley, San Francisco Pub . Lib .
