CHOICE Review

The book is composed primarily of edited papers originally given at a 1984 NIMH Workshop on exercise as a coping mechanism for mental stress. An introduction provides an overview that ties the papers together conceptually. Chapters cover stress, emotions, and health; prevention of sedentary life-style; adherence to exercise regime; interaction between exercise therapy and drug therapy in the treatment of psychiatric patients; and the effect of acute and chronic exercise on anxiety, depression, and personality. The editors include a list of contributors as well as a summary chapter in which they present the current state of knowledge in the field of exercise and mental health as well as gaps in that knowledge that prefigure additional research. This volume makes a significant contribution to the literature because it demonstrates the presence of a research base for exercise as a preventive as well as a therapeutic modality in emotional disorders.-D.J. Douglas, University of Wisconsin-Madison
