CHOICE Review

This is a second edition of the authors' well-known 1977 anthology. Three quarters of the selections are new for this edition. Except for the introductory chapter and section overviews, all of the selections are reprints of articles or book chapters, minimally edited so that the reference citation format is uniform. References are combined at the end and a useful author and subject index is provided. The editors, both well-known researchers in the stress field, have selected a broad, varied, and engaging group of articles ranging from theoretical and empirical research papers to clinical and anecdotal reports. The material is well-suited to the intended audience (undergraduate students), but accessible enough to appeal to a general adult readership. This anthology will be redundant in extensive university collections, but it is strongly recommended for small colleges, community colleges, and public libraries. Well-stocked libraries would be better off acquiring collections of original papers such as Leo Goldberger & Shlomo Breznitz's Handbook of Stress (1982) and the volumes in the ``Stress and Anxiety'' series, edited by Charles Spielberger and Irwin Sarason.-A.L. Porterfield, Oberlin College
