Expanded second edition retains essential sampling theory and technology from the popular first edition, but adds 24 new chapters to cover the most recent sampling technology for all major environmental matrices: water, air, biota, solids, sludges, and liquid wastes. Focuses on the essentials of obtaining reliable samples, including calculating how many samples to collect for specific objectives and confidence levels. Presents typical problems and solutions, sampling equipment, preservation techniques, and special considerations for each matrix. This new edition is useful for both experts and novices who need to obtain reliable environmental samples.

Includes bibliographies and indexes.

CHOICE Review

This reference book describes in detail the many variables involved in the collection, preservation, and preparation of representative environmental samples prior to analysis. Approximately 60 percent of the material is new to this second edition (1st ed., 1988); the remainder from the first edition provides the requisite background and resource information. The 40 chapters cover a wide variety of topics, including sample design, quality control, and some of the legal considerations involved in sampling; and sampling water, air, and biota, as well as solid and hazardous wastes. The quality of writing and the content are consistently and uniformly excellent even though each of the chapters has a different author or authors. In addition to an extensive index, there is a glossary to assist in understanding sampling terminology. A novel and very useful feature is the inclusion of a postcard for ordering free software for estimating sampling requirements and in calculating the requisite number of samples needed to provide a selected level of confidence in the results. Numerous tables, figures, and photographs help to conceptualize the material. Chapter references. Professionals. H. T. McKone; Saint Joseph College
