Research in early childhood education provides a useful base for teacher, administrators, and policymakers as they consider curricula issues. First published in 1987, this volume was particularly rich in its reports on the various facets of preschool education examining math, science, reading, oral language, play, social studies, music, movement, and art. In this new edition, the same areas are covered. Five of the chapters have been written by different authors and thereby present essentially new material. The other seven chapters are substantially the same as in the first edition. The articles are informative and thoughtful, providing historical context and a balanced perspective. As editor, Seefeldt has done a fine job in maintaining a uniformly high quality throughout the book and also in her own chapter on social studies. Reference lists are extensive and current.
