School Library Journal Review

Gr 6 Up-- A book that is notable for its detail on the historical development of the ideas, ideals, and programs that preceded and eventually culminated in the establishment of the Peace Corps. Weitsman touches on the history, politics, work in the field, specific examples of Peace Corps activities, and expectations for the future. The information is presented in a brisk, straightforward chronology of events that takes readers through initiation, crisis, and plateau. Sensitive areas, such as the disappointingly limited recruitment of minorities, are offset by the success stories of those who have participated. The many black-and-white photos are of average quality, but are effective. Maps, a Peace Corps organizational chart, a somewhat limited glossary, and a good bibliography are included. However, the maps of host countries are misleading as they do not identify those countries presently being served, as opposed to all countries served between 1961-1989. Still, the book is a welcome addition, and would make an excellent handbook for anyone considering the Peace Corps, although no addresses of contacts are provided. Fitzgerald's The Peace Corps Today (Dodd, 1986), for a lower grade level, is written in a more intimate tone and includes addresses and telephone numbers. --Ann Yarmal, Greenwich Library, CT (c) Copyright 2010.
